Join us from Aug. 18 – Sept. 7 for the LPC Late-Summer Artist Show featuring Chad Breckenridge, Dana M. Johnson, & Grace Hogan. Gallery hours are 11am-4pm daily.
CHAD BRECKENRIDGE (1948-2024), born in Boise Idaho, was the descendent of pioneers and family who settled in Southern California. He graduated with a BA in Psychology from Sonoma State University and earned his MSW degree in Clinical/Medical Social Work from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities and a Ph.D. in Clinical Social Work from the Institute for Clinical Social Work in Chicago.
For over fifty years he was in private practice as a clinical social worker and psychotherapist in Minneapolis. Chad’s other vocational passion was photography. An award-winning photographer, he produced mostly monochrome portraits, still lifes, and landscapes indicative of his steady determination to see the world as “gray on gray,” not just black and white.
The photographs on display in this exhibit were taken primarily on Madeline Island, where Chad lived for part of every year since the 1980s, with his wife, the artist and painter Sally Brown.
Many residents will recognize his darkroom skills and artistic contributions to documenting Madeline Island life in these photographs, including scenes and structures memorialized in the town of LaPointe and captivating portraits of many Island residents, including “The Men of Madeline Island,” here on loan from the Madeline Island Library.
Chad was also the author of a compelling book, Violent Offenders and their Victims: Restorative Justice Through Mediation (Lexington, 2018). This book was the culmination of years of working with both the incarcerated and the victims of violent crimes to foster among them possibilities for empathic understanding and reconciliation.
The Breckenridge family thanks the LaPointe Center Gallery for making this exhibit of Chad’s photographs available to the public.
