Artist in Residence Program

October 28, 2022

The La Pointe Center for the Arts is a non-profit organization that promotes the arts on Madeline Island through a gallery and retail space, as well as various programs and events. We are pleased to offer a new Artist in Residence Program on Madeline Island for 2023.

Purpose: The Artist in Residence Program provides the space and opportunity on Madeline Island for artists to focus on their ideas, create a body of work, develop a new project or research, and to expand their creativity. Interaction with the community is an essential aspect of the program. We encourage artists with experience who are interested in dedicated time to develop ideas and creative work.

Description of the area: Madeline Island, also known as Moningwaane’akaaning Minis, was first settled by the Anishinaabe people. There remains a strong connection to the Ojibwe culture, whose history dates back thousands of years. It is a place for creativity to flourish in a spectacularly beautiful and natural area, surrounded by Lake Superior.

The island is located two miles across the water from Bayfield, Wisconsin and is reached by ferry, allowing for a true retreat atmosphere. Numerous beaches, hiking trails, rugged ancient cliffs, and the constantly changing lake and sky are truly inspirational. The island is the only year-round inhabited island in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

Program description: The program is open to the following disciplines: Painting, Drawing, Mixed Media, Writing, Music, Surface Design, Fiber Art, and Performance. No work that involves high noise levels, heavy machinery, toxic fumes, or fire risk is allowed.

The residency is for a three-week period beginning May 1, 2023. The large gallery space at the La Pointe Center in downtown La Pointe is available for the period to be used as a studio/work space, as well as place for studio visits with the public, talks or presentations, and exhibit or performance space. The space has work tables and a bathroom with sink.

The artist is responsible for providing all supplies, food, and travel expenses. A vehicle is necessary for transportation to, from, and on the island.

Lodging is provided for three weeks at Chateau Madeline, located on the shore of Lake Superior on a beautiful wooded estate. You’ll have a private cottage about two miles from the studio space.

The artist will be paid a stipend of $500 per week.

See photos below of studio space and accommodation.

Eligibility:  Artists over 21 years of age may apply.

Application Process: There is no entry fee.

Artists are required to schedule time for interacting with the community during the residency. Examples would be to share the process of working, give a talk or presentation, perform, or read work in progress, be open for a studio visit and informal talk, or hold a final exhibit of work. Upon acceptance, details of community interaction will be determined. Applicants with a strong motivation to share their work with the community will be given preference.
