Discussion led by Mark Heir.

The book is The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson published in 2020.  Drawing on diaries, original archival documents, and once-secret intelligence reports, the author provides a new lens on London’s darkest year during the blitz through the day-to day experience of Churchill and his family and advisors.  Lots of intriguing insights and personal details.

Seri already has copies at the Library.

Special Summer Event

Tuesday, June 15, 7 PM Central
The Bluebird Effect by Julie Zickefoose

The Madeline Book Club is join ing together with the MI Wilderness Preservation to host this special June ZOOM. What better way to enjoy the arrival of summer than with a nature read and discussion of this delightful book. Thanks to former college classmate, Joe Scarry, the author will be zooming with us with funding provided by the La Pointe Center for the Arts and MIWP.

The author, a naturalist, bird painter, and songbird rehabilitator, shares her passion and curiosity for “the zone where birds interact with people … the moment when her gaze meets the bright bead of its eye.” She takes care of four astonishingly tiny hummingbirds, “hatched from eggs no bigger than black-eyed peas,” who dominate her life with feedings every 20 minutes. Each chapter is illustrated with Zickfoose’s stunning watercolor paintings and is devoted to a different bird from bluebirds to sandhill cranes.

The book mixes humor, natural history, and memoir to give readers an intimate story of a life lived among wild birds while raising a family, as well.

To receive the ZOOM link a few days before the event, send your email address to  (Paula Weiss 747-2059)  No need to send your email address if you are already receiving book club emails.  If you are new, please indicate if you want to receive future book club emails.
