Live Art!

June 24 @ 2:00 pm - July 4 @ 7:00 pm

LPC 2024 Live Art
Madeline Island Book Club
Live Art!

Cost: Free

Live Art! is an 11-day elder-lead and Ojibwe-catered community gathering led by Becky Wygonik and crew featuring a series of workshops and open builds that are free and open to community members of all-ages and skill levels.

The first workshop invites participants to partake in local food and share stories, wisdom, hardships, and jokes. These community conversations will inform the design of two or more large (12+ feet tall) elder puppets.

The following workshops will teach participants how to create puppets from the beginning concept stages through every step of construction and finishing details.

The workshops will culminate with a dramatic entrance and procession in the Madeline Island Fourth of July Parade where our collaboratively constructed elder puppets can tower over the crowd and remind spectators of the protection and wisdom of those who have come before us.

About the Artist

Becky Wygonik, organizer, artist, and performer, lives in the Chequamegon Bay area and is an enrolled member of the Lac du Flambeau tribe of Lake Superior Ojibwe.

After retiring from small business ownership in 2023, she now puts her time and creative energy into fostering camaraderie and community through puppet building and performance.

Becky was formally educated at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a BA in sculpture and now has 25 years of experience with puppet builds and performances, such as STAGENORTH’s Animal Farm and Wizard of Oz, and puppet protests at Water Protector events around Lake Superior.

In February this year, Becky traveled to New Orleans, LA to help the “Monster Parade” team on puppet builds and performances. It was here she met Henry Lipkis and Jamee Snyder and they all quickly became comrades through their shared love of puppets, costume, performance, and community-building.

Becky is eager to bring the spectacle of puppets in parade through this revival of Live Art on Madeline Island.
