Reggae at Joni’s Beach with Socaholix July 21, 2 – 6 PM

Reggae returns to Joni’s Beach this Saturday, July 21 with Socaholix, a high-energy Caribbean dance band has been gracing stages throughout Minnesota since 2010. Comprised of members from Africa, the Caribbean and the USA, the magical musicianship creates an energy that is both unique and infectious. From the first beat of the drum, the audience is drawn in and within moments, the dance floor is full. Whether a reminder of your Caribbean cruise or simply the hypnotic rhythms the band, it instantly appeals to audiences of all ages. With no other soca (soul + calypso) bands in the area, the Socaholix find themselves in demand for community events, festivals, private events, corporate events and local bars.

Motor over to the island and anchor or come ashore and dance the afternoon away! Charlie will once again be selling beers and brats. The place to be!

Free Thursday Night Concert: Sam Miltich and the Clearwater Hot Club

Thursday, July 12, 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM
Harry Nelson Rec Center
Madeline Island, WI

“Sam is a musical genius, and he’s been
playing brilliant music for a long time.”
– Lowell Pickett, Dakota Jazz Club Owner

Sam Miltich is a self-taught jazz guitarist born and raised in the woods of northern Minnesota. Sam burst on the scene in his teens as a young lion of gypsy jazz, joining Paul Mehling’s Hot Club of San Francisco and touring internationally with the world-renowned Robin Nolan Trio. Sam’s fluid and instinctive sound has graced hundreds of stages, from small town bars on the Iron Range to Lincoln Center.

The Clearwater Hot Club is dedicated to preserving the repertoire and instrumentation of the Jazz Manouche style pioneered by Roma jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. Much of the repertoire played in this group are songs either performed or written by Django Reinhardt, though other styles of music such as French Musette, Brazilian choro, and Eastern European folk music are interpreted through the musical lens and technique of the Jazz Manouche style. In recent years Sam Miltich has written original works of music in the jazz manouche style, giving credence to the roots and traditions of the music while bringing a fresh new voice to it.

Bring dinner, or grab a beer and brat at the show. Come enjoy music on Madeline!

The Star Tribune called Larry “a troubadour for social justice”:

Larry with Pete Seeger, 2014

For 40 years, Long has sung at protests, festivals, union actions and political rallies around Minnesota, the nation and the world. He writes and, in his lilting voice, sings in the social justice tradition of Pete Seeger, whom he knew for decades until Seeger’s death in January. He hews to Seeger’s belief that everyone has “a sacred obligation to do their best at what they’re called upon to do.”

Long was also a very close friend to Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone, who died in a plane crash in 2002. Long composed Wellstone’s campaign songs and sang one of his original compositions at the funeral.

Larry and Kris Kristofferson

Now a Smithsonian Folkways recording artist, Long has sung at major concerts and festivals throughout the United States and world, including Awesome Africa Festival (South Africa), Winnipeg Folk Festival (Canada), at the Hollywood Bowl with Kris Kristofferson, and at Madison Square Garden with Joan Baez, Bruce Springsteen and many others for Pete Seeger’s 90th Birthday Celebration. Larry is presently producing and performing with American Roots Revue which celebrates America’s richest musical traditions of gospel, folk, blues, and R&B.

Long at Madison Square Garden with Joan Baez.

Long has also performed several shows at the Big Top Chautauqua in Washburn.

This concert will also feature Sid Gasner, long-time collaborator with Long and bass player extraordinaire. Also joining them will be Barbara With on vocals and piano.
